Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon continues to work on the series almost 30 years after its initial inception and remains, alongside Super Smash Bros.' Masahiro Sakurai, as one of the only leaders overseeing every fighting game in their respective series to date.

The digital version of Chile's gaming expo, FestiGame, recently featured Ed Boon as a special guest where he was asked to pick a favorite child out of Mortal Kombat's 11 mainline games, spin-offs and updated versions with some fairly surprising answers.

While many older players tend to view Mortal Kombat 2 as the peak of the classic entries, Boon offers a different take on which he likes more.

'I don't have one favorite,' said Boon during the interview. 'I do have a few now really with time passing I can look back and say that was a little more special. For the 2D games, a lot of people's favorite is Mortal Kombat 2. Mine was actually Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. I like the speed of that game.'

The creative director for NetherRealm Studios continues to split his favorites up between the classic 2D entries, the 3D games and the modern version of the historic fighting franchise.

'For the 2D games, a lot of people's favorite is Mortal Kombat 2. Mine was actually Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. I like the speed of that game' - Ed Boon

Boon states that his personal favorite of the 3D era is actually Deception which feels better than MK4, Deadly Alliance and Armageddon.

Though it might be the better / more expected public relations answer to say that the newest game is the best, Mortal Kombat 11 isn't quite there. At least not yet.

'Mortal Kombat X also stands out to me as a favorite too,' said Boon. 'It's the highest selling of all the Mortal Kombat games maybe until 11 because it's doing better than X did. MKX was really special too.'

As for the newest game which just recently saw it's Ultimate update drop last month along with Kombat Pack 2, Boon says that it too may become one of his tops once the dust has settled.

Interestingly, the MK co-creator implies that they aren't done developing the game yet since he says they're still 'in it' though there's currently no more DLC or updates planned that we know about.

Mortal Kombat X has sold over 11 million copies to date while MK11 crossed the 8 million mark earlier this fall in about a year and a half since the newest title launched.

There's not much point asking Boon who's his favorite character though because we've known forever that it's Scorpion.
